San E’s Counselor; The issue of Mental Health

Counselor released by singer/songwriter/rapper/ San E discusses mental health heavily and addresses issues one’s own demon that lurks within us that leads to our miserable fate. The song can be closely tied to Edgar Allen Poes The Black Cat. San E. as the narrator shares similar experiences regarding their feelings and thoughts that had to be repressed which led to destruction stemming from the Freudian concept “repression”. Whether said destruction was inflicted upon them or to another. In Counselor, the song’s music video begins with empty pill bottles and alcohol he is with his “demon” that destroys him. The narrator in The Black Cat has his own repressed feelings in which eventually he cannot control and harms his wife and cat. San E describes his condition as something even he cannot grasp and this numb feeling that takes over. He is not aware of who he is which slowly tears him down within submerging him in this pool of hatred. Similarly to what the narrator had faced expressing his aggression and confusion and mixed emotions as hateful acts. Killing what he once thought was his happiness. Overall, the message is apparent and shows that this internal struggle harms not only us but others around us. The repressed feelings that aren’t being expressed in a healthy manner then turn into vicious acts.
